Law and AI Lab (Fall 2026)

Welcome to the Law and AI Lab!

In this hands-on experimental course, you will learn how generative AI works, study its impact and potential impact on law and society, conduct experiments that expand our collective knowledge of law and AI, and even learn how to use AI for small coding projects.

The course includes lectures, seminar-style discussions, hands-on laboratory sessions, and peer feedback workshops. Lectures will provide the technical and conceptual foundation needed to understand and work with this technology. In seminar discussions, you and your peers will analyze the latest research and discuss generative AI’s ethical, legal, economic, personal, and societal implications. In laboratory sessions, you get to experiment with using generative AI tools for legal work. The goal of these exercises is to help you learn how to critically engage and experiment with AI. We will integrate real-world projects into these sessions so that we can learn how to use this knowledge and power to help real people by solving problems for law school clinics and non-profits.

To take this class, there is no requirement for any level of technical expertise or experience with AI. No one will be asked to pledge allegiance to ChatGPT. This class works best when the students are a mix of luddites, techno-optimists, AI-doomers, econ wonks, environmentalists, and more.
